Small Professor
Small Professor
The City of Brotherly Love gave rise to the next great producer with Jamil Marshall p/k/a Small Professor. While he was born into a musically talented family, Small Pro’s passion for music didn’t take flight until he was a freshman in college in 2004, where he would tap out beats to use for recording his own raps. After spending most of that year crafting beats and composing lyrics, he eventually put down the pen and shifted his focus entirely to production.
Originally inspired by the works of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Buckwild, and (of course) Large Professor, Small Pro’s moniker is the result of both his reverence of the Main Source frontman and his “gigantic” presence at 5’4”. In addition to his solo pursuits, the Philly native represents one fourth of the Wrecking Crew alongside Curly Castro, PremRock and Zilla Rocca.
To date, Small Pro has released collaborative albums with Guilty Simpson, the late Sean Price, Vic Spencer, Rob Cave, and AJ Suede, among others. The producer has also worked with the likes of Smoke DZA, Skyzoo, Blu, Fly Anakin, Von Pea, Your Old Droog and Armand Hammer (billy woods & Elucid), to name a few.
On the solo tip, the Philly beatsmith has crafted a prolific instrumental series titled ‘Jawns,’ previously available exclusively via Bandcamp. Select cuts from the collection have since been remastered and compiled into a three volume set, which has been released via DSPs and cassette, with a limited vinyl release set late 2023, through Coalmine Records.
