Tall Black Guy
Tall Black Guy
From humble origins in Detroit—raised on a healthy diet of Motown, jazz, and early hip‐hop—Terrel Wallace (p/k/a Tall Black Guy) has been consistently building a massive online following through a steady stream of productions filled with incredibly clever sample flips and deft production chops. Counting DJ Premier and Pete Rock as inspirations, the native Midwesterner has been operating on a high musical frequency since the second half of the 2000s with an array of original productions, remixes, edits, and collaborations, all while proving to be equally adept at working with rappers, singers, and sampled voices.
Before the end of the 2010s, Tall Black Guy has worked with several labels from First Word Records, Liquid Beat, Ubiquity and Seamless Recordings, to name a few, and has collaborated on projects with artists such as 80s Babies, The Primeridian, Malice & Mario Sweet, DJ Vadim and The Electric, Maylee Todd, Temika Moore, Teri Tobin, Skyzoo, The Coleman Brothers, Cilla K and Shev Rock, among others.
Tall Black Guy’s output, however, reached its peak during the span of 2020-2021, where he released Restless as We Are — an EP containing the producer’s highest concentration of socially conscious material — followed by the full-length Airplane Mode, a spirit-lifting affair. Trailing Airplane Mode by mere weeks in 2021 was Abstractions, on which TBG partnered with Zo! and featured artists such as Josh Milan, Omar, Elzhi, Black Milk, and BeMyFiasco. And before 2021 came to a close, Tall Black Guy found himself uniting with the lyrically astute Ozay Moore for their acclaimed LP, Of Process and Progression in partnership with Coalmine Records, where the duo beautifully blend Golden Era boom-bap with modern sounds to deliver something altogether timeless and inspiring.
